Born in Iowa City, Iowa, Bernice Cross became a muralist and a painter on canvas in abstract style of figure, genre, and botanical subjects. Known for her originality, creative imagination, sense of humor, and love of fantasy, she painted with a deceptive simplicity and handled color and form with subtlety and a sure touch. She lived in Washington DC and Arlington, Virginia and studied in Wilmington, Delaware at the Wilmington Academy of Art, and in Washington DC at the C.L. Watkins Studio House, and the Corcoran School of Art.
